Satou Sabally Scores 27 Points, Dallas Defeats Washington
Arlington – After a slow first half, the Dallas Wings (8-8) turned on the offensive aggression in a domineering second half performance to defeat the Washington Mystics (9-7) 89-72.
Elena Delle Donne, Shakira Austin and Kristi Toliver all sat out with injuries for Washington, but Ariel Atkins led her team and all scorers in the first half with 15 points. Atkins, however, was held to only a single field goal in the second half.
“I think there’s a lot that stands out,” expressed Dallas Coach Latricia Trammell. “This was definitely a great team win. I mean we out-rebounded them 54 to 24, that’s a great thing. We had 24 assists. Field goals 33-73 for 45 percent. Fast break points, 20. Paint points, 42. I loved the adjustment we had at halftime.”
Both a competitive spirit and a will to win assisted Dallas in pulling away from a resilient Washington team. Satou Sabally scored 27 points and had 15 rebounds. Tierra McGowan also had a double-double, scoring 10 points and 11 rebounds.
“We’re just molding and growing,” says Sabally. “We did what we wanted to do – we didn’t foul too much; we’re growing.”
Arike Ogunbowale became Dallas’ all-time leading scorer on Sunday afternoon. With 2,673 points, Ogunbowale has passed previous record-holder Skylar Diggins-Smith (2,670). She earns the record with 133 career games under her belt. The all-star went scoreless in the first half, but much to the delight of the Dallas crowd – Ogunbowale’s 15 points in the third quarter helped Dallas to pull away.
“We have a lot of weapons,” shares Ogunbowale. “The ceiling is high.”
Dallas will face the Las Vegas Aces twice this week – once on the road.
