Has America Finally Discovered the Real Heroes?

It seems like every other minute now we’re learning of another person perishing due to complications of COVID-19 (Coronavirus). While the President says he’d like to see the country “raring to go” by Easter (less than three weeks) - medical professionals everywhere warn that lessening restrictions could result in an even more massive spread of the virus.

Tom Brady signed a new contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He will make $50 million over two seasons.

About an hour ago an infant in Illinois died from complications of the Coronavirus. There are shelter-in-place orders in major cities around the country. Children have had their school year interrupted and are now being introduced to a new world of only virtual-learning - a very confusing new reality for both educators and students, as well as parents.

Taylor Swift and Kim Kardashian West have broken their silence about a leaked video.

People are dying every single day from this unbiased virus. Medical professionals are delivering the news to the limited family members allowed in hospital waiting rooms around the country. Without enough masks, ventilators and various other resources - these doctors, nurses and other support staff members are showing up and going beyond the call of duty.

Wall Street is suffering and America is in an unfamiliar place. We must return to work, or at least the younger and less-at-risk group, according to our “President.”

I can remember one of my very first students (about 12 years ago) asking me, “why doesn’t the government just print more money if it needs more money?” Although the narrative was so adorable in its naiveté, those words stuck with me. America can always make more money, be it by taking from one group and giving to another or continuing to have that small percentage up top earn from the labor of the rest of us.

America can and will make more money. Despite the suggestion made by a politician in Texas, we don’t have to sacrifice our grandparents to make this happen.

Imagine the trauma and the resentment that is sure to come once we finally reach a resolve. Some of the medical professionals risking their lives have more in college debt than they’ll make over the next three years. The business owners, many with sound plans and true devotion to their respective crafts - may never rebound.

Every member of the Utah Jazz is said to now be in the free and clear of COVID-19, after two players tested positive. Meanwhile a Detroit cameraman, who worked the Utah vs Detroit game on March 7 is now in a medically-induced coma after testing positive for the virus.

While many celebrities realize their privilege and are offering their money and resources, the real heroes in this country are not the rich and famous.
