Tigers Complete Impressive Comeback Win
In quite dramatic fashion, the Lady Tigers of Lincoln (5-4) defeated the Lady Vikings of Pinkston (13-4) 57-54 Thursday night.
Senior Kenshawnna Reed led Pinkston with 18 points, scoring early and often. Freshman Victoria Flores joined her with an onslaught of scoring in the third quarter, contributing 13 points.
Pinkston would control the game for nearly four quarters, until the final moments. While Lincoln struggled offensively in the first half, their assertiveness on defense could not be denied. Down 31-22 at the half, Lincoln had a definite hill to climb, but appeared confident to start the third quarter.
The Vikings continued to score in the second half, at one point claiming an 11-point lead. Lincoln, however, would not concede. Guard Nakia Brumley scored a team high 16 points for the Tigers. Senior Alexis Brown added eight points and controlled the Tigers’ offense well in the second half.
“Even though we were down and struggling, we didn’t give up,” says Brown. “No matter how frustrated we got or what the refs were calling – we focused on our goal of winning.”
With the game tied - in an attempt to cap off an impressive comeback, the Tigers found themselves on the free throw line once again. Both benches waited in angst, as Lincoln had struggled from the free throw line all night.
Junior Z’Mya Cox had just reentered the game after being sidelined with severe leg cramps when she was fouled. Cox would miss the first free throw, but hit the go ahead foul shot on her second attempt.
Poised to retake the lead, Pinkston traveled the length of the court and calmly ran their offense. On the biggest possession of the night, Lincoln’s defense prevailed. The Tigers stole the ball and Cox scored on a breakaway layup as the clock expired.
