ARLINGTON – The Georgia Southern Eagles (9-6, 1-1) defeated the UT Arlington Mavericks (4-11, 0-2) 77 - 64 Saturday afternoon, in a back and forth defensive battle.

After a tough loss to Georgia State on Thursday, the Mavericks were determined to play some of their best basketball against Georgia Southern. In a high-energy contest that featured two very aggressive defenses, both Georgia Southern and UTA found it difficult to score on many early offensive possessions.

There was no denying the hustle on both ends. From the tipoff, Georgia Southern moved the ball and showed no hesitation when it came to shooting the long-ball. The Mavericks’ offensive scheme appeared to include a detailed passing game, until the best shot presented itself. They elected not to drive to the basket as forcefully as the home crowd likely would’ve preferred.

The Mavericks managed to boast a ten point lead midway through the first half, but quickly found themselves trailing due to an onslaught of three pointers from Georgia State.

The teams headed into halftime tied at 32 points.

Quan Jackson gave the Mavericks trouble all afternoon with his perimeter scoring and his ability to spread the floor. Jackson finished with a game high 21 points, including five made three-point field goals. Isaiah Crawley added 15 points and six rebounds for the Eagles. Elijah McCadden added 12 points and five rebounds.

Junior guard Edric Dennis led all UTA scorers with 16 points. He also contributed four total rebounds, an assist and was perfect from the free throw line. Andres Ibarguen scored 11 points and totaled six rebounds for the Mavericks.

Statistically the teams were very comparable - Georgia Southern was just more effective in scoring.

The Mavericks look to rebound at Appalachian State next Thursday.
