Dwight Powell's Energy to be Missed this Season
Tuesday night will be a forgettable night for the entire Dallas Mavericks organization.
Before an anxious crowd and right in front of the Dallas bench, Dwight Powell fell to the floor all by his lonesome. Untouched and moving in the direction of the basket, the beloved Dallas player just fell and it was immediately obvious that his injury was significant.
An MRI confirmed Wednesday that Powell’s 2019-2020 season is over, as he did indeed tear his right Achilles.
So many thoughts, fears and emotions of frustration were apparent on Powell’s face as he was helped off the court. This type of injury after all has changed the performance of so many players throughout the years. Of course Powell can recover. Of course he can return to the game. But the recovery, however, is extensive. Jumping fearlessly and running without abandon will have to return to Powell over an extended period of time.
Powell has to be patient.
What the Mavericks will lose in his absence is a consistently unique source of energy.
Powell typically plays center, but positions himself to also guard the power forward of the opposing team. He is an aggressor on defense and a relentless offensive presence down low. But before the game even gets started, Powell is simply fun to be around. His pre-game rituals, dunks and animated sideline runs with fellow Dallas player Maxi Kleber are all loved by Dallas fans.
Powell is averaging 9.6 points and 5.7 rebounds per game in his first season as a full-time starter. The Mavericks will definitely have to find someone to fill the void for the remainder of the season. Whether that gap will be filled by a Dallas bench player or via a trade remains to be seen.
We’re wishing Powell a complete recovery.
