Missy Franklin retires at 23
Missy Franklin is only 23 years old - young enough to make a few more attempts to win gold in the olympics. The five-time Olympic gold medalist and two-time FINA World Swimmer of the Year, just announced her retirement from swimming today in an article posted on ESPN.com.
Franklin has dealt with chronic shoulder pain in recent years, and cites such pain as reason enough for her retirement.
At just 17-years old Franklin became the first American woman to win four golds in a single Olympics (London) in any sport. Even more impressive, Franklin followed the London performance up by winning six gold medals at the 2013 World Aquatics Championships in Barcelona.
Franklin has definitely done more in her career than many athletes twice her age. Hopefully she can enjoy retirement without any regrets.
